Tea Toddies: A Little History + Soulful Sip Whisky Tea Toddy (Hot or Iced) Recipe

by Dawn Reid, PhD, PCC 23 Jan 2026

There’s something timeless about a toddy—warmth in a mug, comfort in a sip, and that slow-down feeling you get when the world finally hushes. Long before “cozy season” became a vibe, people were reaching for toddies as a simple ritual: hot liquid, a little spirit, something sweet, and often citrus.

A quick history of the toddy (and why tea became a natural match)

The word “toddy” is often linked to “tārī,” a fermented palm sap drink from India that entered English through colonial trade routes. Over time, in Britain and later in America, the toddy evolved into what many of us recognize today: a mix of spirit + hot water + sweetener + spice or citrus.

Historically, toddies were more than a nightcap. They were used as cold-weather comfort and, in many households, as a home remedy—especially when someone felt run-down. Tea naturally slid into tradition because it was already associated with soothing the body, stretching ingredients, and creating a calming moment. A tea toddy was (and still is) a way to turn a simple cup into a whole vibe: aromatic, restorative, and slow-sipping.

And that’s the heart of it—toddy culture has always been about ritual. A pause. A breath. A little warmth. A little music in the background. A little “you made it through the day.”

Recipe: A Soulful Sip Whisky Tea Toddy (Hot or Iced)

Smoky, citrus-kissed, and smooth—this is a toddy that feels like velvet and vinyl. You can sip it hot when you want comfort, or iced when you want something crisp with a slow-burning finish.

What you’ll need

Step 1: Brew the tea

  1. Brew 6 oz of the Smoky Orange Vanilla Black Tea.

  2. Steep for 3–5 minutes.

  3. Set aside to cool slightly.

Iced version (shaken)

Instructions

  1. Fill a shaker with ice.

  2. Add:

    • 1 oz Tennessee Honey Whisky

    • 1/2 oz Grand Marnier

    • 6 oz brewed tea (cooled slightly)

    • Sweetener to taste (optional)

  3. Shake well.

  4. Fill a Collins/long glass with ice.

  5. Strain and pour the toddy over ice.

  6. Garnish with an orange slice and mint.

  7. Sip soulfully. :)

Hot version (stirred)

Instructions

  1. Add to a favorite mug:

    • Hot brewed tea (6 oz)

    • 1 oz Tennessee Honey Whisky

    • 1/2 oz Grand Marnier

    • Sweetener to taste (optional)

  2. Stir with a spoon.

  3. Garnish with an orange slice (and mint if you like).

  4. Slow sip. Warm up. Enjoy.

Soulful serving notes (optional, but recommended)

  • Want it brighter? Add a quick squeeze of orange.

  • Want it deeper? Let the tea steep closer to 5 minutes for a bolder backbone.

  • Want it extra cozy? A tiny pinch of cinnamon can play beautifully with the smoky orange notes.
