Coffee, Cram Sessions, and the Collegial Vibe: A Soulful Study Story

by Dawn Reid, PhD, PCC 11 Feb 2026

Some of my best memories smell like midnight.

Not the “party still on the clothes” kind of midnight—more like warm paper, highlighters, and that bold, rich coffee that hits the back of your throat and tells your brain, We’re not done yet. In my earlier college years, pulling an all-nighter was common for me. I don’t recommend it—not even a little—but back then, excellence felt like a promise I had to keep.

And baby… I kept it.

The pot that carried me

When my room got quiet, and the world finally stopped asking for my attention, I’d set up my little study sanctuary. Books open. Notes everywhere. References stacked like a Thanksgiving plate.

Then came the ritual: a pot of strong coffee—no playing around. I’d pour cup after cup like I was trying to outpace the clock. Four to six cups are easy. A caffeine buzz so loud it could’ve been a marching band.

And the soundtrack? Oh, the soundtrack was the real co-signer.

Head boppers and highlighters

When the work got heavy—when that last sentence wouldn’t land, when the research started feeling like a maze—I’d turn the music up and let the beat do what my tired mind couldn’t.

Whitney Houston would slide in like, “I’m Your Baby Tonight”—and suddenly I’m back in it, typing like the deadline is watching.

Then the energy would climb.

Run-DMC---anything they made. House of Pain. “Jump Around.” Kris Kross with that “Jump, Jump.”

You see the theme.

It was like the music was telling my eyelids, Don’t you dare. Like the bass line had a job to do. Like every hook was a hand on my back pushing me toward the finish line.

That’s what coffee does when it’s brewed with purpose. That’s what music does when it’s rooted in culture. It becomes more than sound—more than a drink.

It becomes a tradition. A whole vibe!

When the work is done, the vibe must shift.

But once the last article review was complete… once the final assignment check hit “submit”… it was time to settle down.

Now listen—after all that coffee, sleep didn’t come easily. My body would be tired, but my mind would still be doing the two-step.

So I’d change the music the way you change the lighting when your company leaves.

The head boppers had done their job. Now I needed the slow jams to bring me home.

Marvin Gaye. D’Angelo. Atlantic Starr.

Something mellow. Something rhythmic. Something that felt like a deep exhale.

And then—boom.

Crash.

Sleep would catch me before my head hit the pillow, like the night was finally saying, Alright, baby, you can rest now.

Looking back with love (and a little amazement)

When I look back on those days, it’s with fondness—and a little shock—that I pushed so hard for excellence. I completed several degrees since then, and somehow, the pattern still lives in me.

Because here I am again—working on yet another master’s degree, this time in Public Health.

The stakes feel different now. The wisdom is deeper. And the balance? Oh, the balance is necessary.

These days, I might sip one or two cups of coffee—but I’ve learned to meet that bold brew with something softer.

Herbal tea.

A calming cup that reminds my body it’s okay to slow down, even while my goals are still in motion.

Coffee, tea, and the “collegial vibe.”

I still keep a headbopper in my back pocket for those late-night hours. Because sometimes you need a beat that says, Keep going.

But I also honor the wind-down now. I honor the shift. I honor the way a warm herbal blend can bring you back to yourself.

And if you’ve been hanging with us on the Soulful Sips 4U social media pages—or reading along in this blog—you already know what I’m about to say:

It’s truly a vibe when you drink coffee or tea and introduce music or conversation.

In this case, it was music, coffee, and my studies.

The collegial vibe.

A little love note to the late-night dreamers

If you’re in a season where you’re chasing something—building, studying, grinding, creating—let this be your reminder:

  • Brew with intention.

  • Play the music that lifts your spirits.

  • And when it’s time, steep something gentle and let your body come down easy.

Because the goal isn’t just to finish.

The goal is to finish whole.

And whether you’re sipping bold coffee or herbal tea, whether you’re “jump, jump”-ing through your to-do list or swaying through a slow jam…

There’s a steep and brew for every crew.

And for every late-night dream? There’s a soulful sip waiting to carry you through.
